using needles to treat musculoskeletal pain

ABOUT MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE

Medical Acupuncture is supported by western medical evidence rather than traditional Chinese theories. It’s effective in a wide range of painful conditions and is commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pain.

Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle. It can have an effect on the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received.

Modern research also shows that acupuncture can do more than reduce your pain. It can also have a beneficial effect on your health so you may notice an improved sense of wellbeing after treatment.

TECHNIQUES

Fine needles are inserted through the skin and left in position. The length of time a needle will be left in place may vary from a very brief period up to about twenty minutes. I never leave you in the room alone with needles inserted.

I make a decision on the number of needles you need at each consultation. Sometimes only two or three are necessary, on other occasions I use more. I also offer an electro-acupuncture technique where a mild electric current is used to enhance the effect of the needles.
